How to Upgrade Ubuntu 17.04 to Ubuntu 17.10

Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) will be released on October 19, 2017. This version will be supported for 9 months until July 2018. For those looking for long term support versions of Ubuntu, they may want to install Ubuntu 16.04 (LTS) or wait for then upcoming 18.04 (LTS). The LTS versions are usually supported for 5 years.

Ubuntu 17.10 replaces Unity with Gnome Shell as its default desktop environment. It’s powered by 4.13 Kernel and runs Gnome on Wayland by default. Xorg is also available for choice.

Upgrade to Ubuntu 17.10 from Ubuntu 17.04

Before getting started, you need to do some preparations:
   1. Backup of important data, bookmarks, and other user documents.
   2. Remove or disable third-party repositories.

Launch Software & Updates utility, navigate to Other Software tab, and remove /disable all third-party repositories.

 
 3. Choose download from ‘Main Server’ in Software & Updates utility.
 4. select the Updates tab on that panel, set the “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version” drop-down menu to “For any new version”

5. select the Additional Drivers tab, choose an open-source driver if a proprietary one is in use.

6. Remove other desktop environments (KDE, Cinnamon, etc). Upgrading desktop packages may take a few more minutes in the upgrading process.

7. Make your system up-to-date by running command in terminal:

$ sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

  

 After all, launch Update Manager via the command below and it will prompt that Ubuntu 17.10 is available after checking for updates:

$ sudo update-manager -d

 Click the Upgrade and confirm in the next dialog, follow the wizard util done.
